Calendula another good herb

Calendula is a really pretty and a really useful herb to have growing in your gardens.  We brought some seeds and begged seeds off my Mom when we moved.  Calendula also re-seeds easily so we have only ever had to plant seeds once and actually some years I will pull up some of the new plants so there is enough room.

Now there are two different colors (maybe more) of calendula, the darker orange one being the most medicinal.  I will pull out the lighter ones and let the darker orange blossoms grow.

Calendula can be used in many ways.  I have used it to make an eye wash with distilled water and for salve since it is wonderful for your skin.  I will pick the flower heads and dry them as well as place some in a jar with olive oil to get an infused oil for salve.

The dried calendula is beautiful in a jar especially in the winter when bright colors give me a pick up from the dull colors outside. The color is like looking at a bright ray of sunshine.

We have been picking and drying the heads in the sun lately, haven't made an infusion with oil yet.  But we have time, the calendula will bloom all year long, right up to the first frost.
